Abstract: In this talk I will present a complete solution to the Ovals problem, which corresponds to determining the best constant in a Poincare-type inequality on functions defined on the unit circle and subject to an angular constraint. This problem has attracted a lot of attention in the past 30 years due to its connections to certain Schrodinger operators and Lieb-Thirring inequalities. The solution relies on an optimal control approach. This is joint work with J. Denzler, F. Jean and E. Trelat.
Yacine Chitour was born in 1968 in Algeria. He graduated from Ecole Polytechnique in 1990 and got a PhD in mathematics in 1996 at Rutgers University, NJ USA in 1996. He joined Universite Paris-Sud in 1997 as Associate Professor and became full professor in 2004 at the Laboratoire des signaux et systemes, Universite Paris-Sud. In 2018, he becane distinguished professor of University Paris Saclay where he is since then. He is also member of Institutional Universitaire de France since 2018, associate editor of SICON since 2020 and has been director of the Excellence Institute of Paris Saclay on Control and Decision (iCODE then HCODE) from 2014 till 2024. His interests lie in geometric control, optimal control, switcheching and delay syatems as well as control of partial differential equations.
